For 27 years, Steve Harwell fronted the rock band Smash Mouth. The band was formed in 1994 along with drummer Kevin Coleman, guitarist Greg Camp, and bassist Paul De Lisle. Paul is the only original member still in the band.
Smash Mouth broke out in 1997 with their hit ‘Walking On The Sun,’ from their debut album ‘Fush Yu Mang.’ Their 1999 song ‘All Star,’ which was featured prominently in the opening scene of ‘Shrek’ brought the band even more fame and a lifetime of memes. Smash Mouth also covered The Monkees’ ‘I’m A Believer’ for the animated classic’s soundtrack.
Despite the band being successful, Steve has had some controversial run-ins on stage, like when he threatened to fight members of an audience at a 2015 food festival in Colorado. He was also disoriented onstage during an October 2021 performance, which led to his retirement from the band.
