Matthew Perry Revealed The Cast Made A Rule To Keep A Friendship Behind The Scenes No Matter What

While promoting the Friends Reunion, Matthew Perry revealed an unwritten rule on set followed by the cast of Friends. According to the late Matthew Perry, this was a rule suggested by director, Jim Burrows. Given their great chemistry on-set, it was reccommended that the cast kept just as close behind the camera.

Perry revealed about the important rule, “If we were hooking up, or there was any strangeness going on, that could have messed with things."

“So we kept a friendship, and we did become really good friends. And we are really good friends to this day. And we kept that going, and I think that was very important.”

Matt LeBlanc added to the statement stating that his fellow castmates were like brothers and sisters. Schwimmer agreed that the rule was very much an 'unspoken' part of their close bond. Clearly, the rule was followed by all cast members as even after the show wrapped up, the main six still found time to reunite every couple of years.

In Terms Of The Shoot Process, Friends Broke Rules Compared To Other Sitcoms

Although Friends had certain strict rules behind the scenes, they also broke rules on-set. For some comedies, touching the script or making an adjustment is forbidden. However, that wasn't the case on Friends. The main six would watch the show back together and give each other tips on how they could adjust. In addition, what was written in the script didn't necessarily mean that was going to make the final cut.

The cast would feel it out and if a change needed to be made at the last second to better a scene, they were definitely going to do that. At the end of the way, it was all about getting a positive reaction from the audience.

In terms of unscripted moments, the show saw plenty. One iconic moment took place in season 6, and it got quite the reaction, so much so that Friends had to edit the crowd noise when Jennifer Aniston used the unscripted line. Rachel was livid about her marriage to Ross after they married under the influence. Rachel would assess the moment as 'the world's worst hangover' which proved to be an iconic line in the show's history and one that was completely made up.

Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer were other talented stars on the show that were able to adjust on the fly and come up with their own unique spin on a certain line.

Matthew Perry Used The Perfect Example To Describe His Close Relationship To The Friends Cast

Matthew Perry discussed his close bond with Friends' co-stars in the best way possible. The actor revealed if he ever saw his co-stars at a party, the night with everyone else was done, and he would spend the majority of his time reuniting with one of the other main five stars.

Perry said, "The best way that I can describe it is after the show was over, at a party or any kind of social gathering, if one of us bumped into each other, that was it. That was the end of the night."

He continues, "You just sat with the person all night long and that was it. You apologized to the people you were with, but they had to understand you had met somebody special to you and you were going to talk to that person for the rest of the night. And that’s the way it worked."

A special feeling and friendship for the cast. Perry went on to reveal that even if time passed, everyone was still just one phone call away. The actor also admitted to getting emotional during the reunion given that gratitude he felt.

"At the reunion, I was the one who cried more than anyone because I knew what I'd had, and the gratitude I felt then matches the gratitude I feel today."

Perry's contributions to this world won't be forgotten, and it goes above and beyond his involvement on Friends.
